Åsa Kärner – Guilt-Free Indulgence

Auteur : Kris | 03-26-2011

I was finally able to spend some time searching in Sweden for our next Cocotte-Poussin. In my ‘past work life’ I had spent many hours in this beautiful country that hosts a wealth of talented young designers like Åsa. If you look beyond Ikea, well you see how Ikea got started anyway….

There is something about the shortened days in winter that get the Swedes indoors and creating. If you stroll through Göteborg or Stockholm in the evenings, you are welcome to peep in the windows of their inviting homes. They actually want you to look in! The curtains are opened and there are lovely lights and candles in the windows.

If I lived in Stockholm or downtown anywhere for that matter, I would love to show off the alvisilkchair proudly in the window.

alvisilkchair
Materials: FSC oak, environmentally friendly silk thread, ecological soap
Produced by: McIntosh Möbler och Inredning
Measurements: 100x65x80cm

This is what todays’ youth promises in the field of design. Åsa insists “my ambition is to design furniture and products, using environmentally-friendly materials with long durability, a focus on sustainable production methods and humane working conditions. This is my criteria that I use for a design and production platform.”

Authentic, genuine and back to basics….with a twist.

It’s something about the silk thread as a noble medium that caught my eye and the inviting ‘hammock’ approach to the design. You just want to sit in it and feel yourself supported by aqua blue silk threading.

Åsa was also inspired to design the alvisilkchair after witnessing the “Lignium” installation by Ann Hamilton at the Wanås Sculpture Park in the south of Sweden.

“I loved how Anne Hamilton had strung thin flaxen threads between the beams in a barn. It was striking how she, using very simple means, created new dimensions and spatial concepts. Also the harp, as a delicate yet powerful string instrument, fascinates me, as well as its’ design with strings that are thin yet strong.”

First prototype for the alvisilkchair

Since 2008 Åsa is working to complete her Bachelor’s degree at the Danish Design School in Copenhagen, with an emphasis in furniture and interior design. She is already full-throttle with her alvidesign company which she began in 2007.

Well done Åsa and thank you from Cocotte Design.
