Daphna Isaacs - May the celebration continue…

Auteur : Kris | 03-05-2011

The Valentine’s celebration continues with another very hip couple in design….Let’s travel to Holland where Daphna and Laurens work and live in Eindhoven. “The fact that we work together in the same field and go home together is quite intense, but we love it!” confirms Daphna.

I just discovered their work at the Maison & Objet fair in Paris in January.

Tafelstukken (in porcelain and oak)

Daphna allows the spectator to interpret the lamps themselves that are reflective in spirit and light, or may reflect an objet. (your keys, business cards, fruit or a magazine). Do you think they quick-ripen avocados?!

They are all limited editions with 15 productions maximum, and all are produced in their workshop in Eindhoven.

With this series, ‘Daphna Laurens’ (their trade name) received the DMY ‘Three out of Ten’ award. The jury found them tactile and pleasantly functional. I find them truly authentic with a very pure design.

Precious (7 poupées ‘imparfaites’ en porcelaine). Daphne’s final project at the Design Academy

Daphna admits that she doesn’t like jokes within the design realm (but my partner surely does!). I prefer focusing on the shape, silhouette and colors…”

Hide (Live and unplugged, folkloric and poetic)

Just imagine Daphna as a little girl, drawing on a small table alongside her father who is an architect….a small made-to-fit table so that he can work in peace and keep an eye on his future artist who shall be grandiose one day… Not everyone has the chance to have an artist for a mother and an architect for a father, whom certainly exercised her right brain from the start. A few years later, Daphna stormed the Design Academy in Eindhoven (2001-2006). And yes, another young talent that has yet to reach the 30-year old mark !

Basis Table (600 year old oak, iron and glass)

“Now I’m in my Bauhaus, Russian constructivism, Finn Juhl, the Eames, Lazlo Moholy Nagy phase… But that may all change. ” Her inspirations come from all over. “They may be anything at all. I think I speak for all artist-designers as we see commonplace things, in a different light. For example, if I see a leaf, it may become a chair!”

Daphna loves: a dream-house beachside, yummy soup, fruits & veggies, leggings only! (no pants please!), the movie ‘Amélie Poulain’, and the artist Anish Kapoor.

Daphna would rather avoid : perfume (too omnipresent for her sensitive nose) but prefers the book & movie ‘The Perfume’, sweets, and the morning wake up call…

Both Daphna and Laurens have their hands in many wonderful exhibitions during which they let their inspirations thrive. Have a look at what they’ve accomplished thus far: www.daphnalaurens.nl
