Annika Göransson - Patchwork poétique
Auteur : Esther | 02-26-2011
Annika Göransson is a Swedish design student living in Copenhagen and the creator of the exceptional, poetic ‘Mosaiik lounge chair’.

This grid also serves as a framework for the upholstering. Inspired by the structure of corncobs and sunflower buds the upholstery is made out of 297 foam cubes. The cubes are spread and packed with the curving of the seat. By pressing the cubes through a wool fabric a smooth surface is created on top while a rough structure forms in the back. By leaving the back uncovered, the user can experience the different structures created by the upholstering technique and also gain an understanding of how the seat is constructed.

Annika also won the Upholstery competition initiated by the Upholstery Guild in Copenhagen in April 2010 for another design, the two-seater sofa named Ostrea.

Interview with this vibrant up and coming designer:
When did you know you wanted to become a designer?
I have always had a creative interest and been fascinated by beautiful shapes and materials. When I was twenty years old I went traveling for a year and after I came back to Sweden I knew I wanted to go in this direction. During my travels I met many creative people doing what they loved, who inspired me a lot.
What is your process?
At the start of a project I try to not control my thoughts but just let all ideas come out, good and bad. I usually start making quick sketches and just let my mind flow. I know immediately when I find something interesting and I love to get that gut feeling that this is something special! Then I start developing the chosen idea and try to define the core values around it to turn the idea into a concept. After that I start working in the workshops with prototypes experimenting with dimensions and materials. I love working in the workshops because a lot of things change and fall into place when working with the material and shape in your hands.
Who are your favorite designers and how do they inspire you?
One of my favorite designers is Patricia Urquiola. I love the way she works with textures and colors and I think she has a natural sense for shape and proportion.
Do you have a favorite among all your creations, if so why is this your favorite?
At the moment I am very happy about my latest piece Mosaiik lounge chair because I think the upholstering is unique and the front and the back of the chair creates an interesting play with textures.

What is your dream home? Or what is your ideal living space?
I would love to live by the sea because it can be both peaceful and wild. I prefer light and open spaces with a mixture of old and new things.
What do you like to do when you have a moment for yourself?
When I’m home alone I like to bake while listening to music, preferably loud.
In the summertime I like to go for a run down to the beach to get my energy flowing.
What are your current projects?
This semester I am focusing on light. Right now I am working on a project with the goal to strengthen the identity of a specific area in Copenhagen, mainly through light. I am taking my Bachelor degree at the Danish Design School this summer and I would like to work with a lamp series as my final project.
