Arzu Firuz - The Art of making wholes

Auteur : Ariane | 01-29-2011

Born in Istanbul of a Turkish-Panamanian couple, Arzu left her hometown in 1999 to continue her art studies in Paris. In 2006, with her graduate degree in applied arts from de l’école Duperré almost in her pocket, Arzu already knew that she wanted to work in the field of decoration.

Her final project gained the support of an industrialist, allowing her to exhibit her unique carpets at Maison & Objet.

The innovative shapes, the patterned openings that play with perspectives, and the colors bring a new creative attitude to the world of rugs.

With the urge to rediscover her roots, Arzu combines ornamentation with Eastern graphics to vinyl surfaces, which make reference to Western soil.

Her first collection “Optical illusion rugs” inspired by Persian rugs and Moroccan Zelliges imitate different woods. Intended for interiors, these rugs are soft, lightweight, 2.6 mm thick, and meant to be changed, depending on the mood.

“Red Carpet” is her second collection. Personally, I could see it used as the “Red Carpet” to honor the movie stars invited to the 64th edition of our adored “Palais du Festival” in Cannes. Why not? This Red Carpet could be used in public spaces because the vinyl that Arzu uses is entirely suited for pedestrian traffic.

Between these two collections, Ligne Roset publishes «Azra», laser cut rugs in black vinyl lace. These “chic” models are super easy to install at your home, on the ground but also on the wall!

The photographs in the catalog allow you to imagine it!

Arzu publishes most of her own models, thanks to the support of her industrial partner “Tarkett” and her right hand man, none other than her husband. Orders from abroad are more important than those from France. Arzu manages everything from her small workshop, all of 30m2, located in a business incubator in the Paris region.

The business structure is still small, which does not prevent this creator to want to direct her creations more towards color... people need more color in their daily lives,  “Red Carpet” could one day be “Yellow Carpet” or Blue, Purple…the colors could be endless !

Arzu continues her work, contrasting industrial materials with precious, ornamental ones of the orient.

She redirects the latticework to create veils cut in shades of blue and green; it’s just beautiful. She takes a simple industrial technique, tarpaulin on a construction site, and turns it into something that brings in the viewer with its transparency playing with lighting effects.

These rugs have not been greatly marketed; Arzu still creates on demand for stage projects or for private individuals. They were produced especially for the staging of the opera «The Marriage of Figaro» at the National Center of Music and Dance at La Villette.

Imagine it, there under lace-like shelter, sipping a drink and letting yourself be carried away by the mood of the moment, not bad, right?

But Moucharabieh can also be used as room dividers in a home or office for a daily pleasure...

All procedures used are for the creator to express the labrinyth of worlds and cultural mixes.

Arzu lives in a small apartment with simple décor because at this time she is primarily focused on her business.

Her passion – the cinema, especially the films by director / writer Fatih Akin, which serve as a source of inspiration for new projects.

Her favorite object - a single photo in her office, depicting a landscape with the sea in the background, which is essential for her to escape.

One Wish – To work with the brand Moroso, because it’s a woman director and you feel the feminine touch...

She loves - the work of Patricia Urquiola and has rather good taste! We, the cocottes, love that she is part of our blog.

I will end with her latest creation. I’ll let you see without comment or maybe just one... I want one!!

Thank you Arzu for our exchange and good luck for your future endeavors!

See you soon!
