Johanna Mattsson – Rising Talent

Auteur : Kris | 01-22-2011

Johanna and I have something in common, we both love the street artist Banksy as well as other artists like: Louise Campbell, Sandra Backlund, Lovisa Burfitt, Arne Jacobsen and Lars Lerin. So she definitely has great taste and influence!

Despite her young age I find her designs very mature, clear, simple yet elegant, “with a twist” as Johanna puts it. She must get some of this from her parents who are both architects and who surely inspired her to pursue the field of design at an early age.
“Wired is a table lamp where the length of the wire allows you to adjust the lampshade to your own needs.”

Her design inspiration comes from “Anything like words, patterns, the weather… But mostly I just want to react on something that happens, like a trend, a behavioral pattern or try out a new material.”

However she is truly inspired by Jasper Morrison and Naoto Fukasawa´s thinking in their book Super Natural for their understanding of the elegance in usefulness and normality. But also Konstantin Grcic for his construction technique and material experiments , Philippe Starck for his playfulness and Marcel Wanders for his bold craziness. Are you taking note cocottes?!
Her work is strong and long lasting, both in design and material.

Ashes to Ashes

This will surely be her claim to fame and her personal mark in the world of design.

“Ashes to Ashes is my graduation project from Danmarks Designskole. It is a chair that can be used both inside and outdoors, that is both locally produced and grown. The chair is made of wood from the ash tree from which I got inspiration for both the shape and the name. The purpose was to create a chair that has a good production and lifecycle; that doesn’t harm the nature it is created to sit in and enjoy.”

«“Ring of fire is a updated version of a candelabra that fits candles in different lengths and makes a good conversation piece at the dining table.”

What does your dream home look like?
Actually I live in my dream home, I just can´t afford all the furniture I want, yet. It is a big, old apartment with high ceiling, wooden floors, double doors and big windows. I just wish I had a garden…

What are your likes and dislikes in design?
(In product design) I like things that are functional and well thought through, easy to use, fits well for its purpose and the shape is well balanced, in harmony with the user.
I don’t like design that is dysfunctional, too complicated to use or just “designed” with no purpose.

Where are you going in the future?
Hopefully I work for a company where I can develop new ideas with others but also have time to create my own design on the side.

Best of luck to you Johanna in your rise to success in the design arena!
