Marjolaine Thiry - The magic of paper
Auteur : Axelle | 11-27-2010
I discovered Marjolaine’s work one morning in my inbox. She contacted us to learn more about Cocotte Design. Her talent and her savoir-faire immediately captivated me. I wanted to share her talent with all of you.

Her creations are somewhat strange (as I think of these huge colorful characters), yet simple and refined, and original in terms of shape and color. There’s even a touch of humor in some of her sculptures (le petit paresseux).

How did you start your career as an artist? What is your story?
I started by making small paper figures, which were already at that time part human part animal. I started to sell them in a décor shop, which led me to my first exhibition, “The little papers”. At that time, I had a workshop in which I could create large-scale characters.

Soon after, I did a personal exhibition at the St. Exupery cultural center in Reims and participated in various other events leading me to work with the gallery “Edgard le Marchand d’art”. Afterward, I could no longer rent my workshop as the owner had decided to sell it.
For the moment, I have put my personal creations aside and concentrate on orders that can be either décor or sculptural. But I hope to be back to my personal projects again soon.
Why have you chosen the animal theme for your sculptures?
I cannot really explain why I chose this world of animals…it’s probably carried on from my childhood.

Do you think the feminine sensibility is different from that of men in your profession?
I do not necessarily think that the feminine sensibility is different from that of men but rather feel that everyone has something very special to express, however he/she chooses to express it. It all depends on what you want to say and where you want to go with it.
What do you like or dislike in interior decoration?
In interior design, I do not like anything perfectly done, which is what we most often see in the standard decoration shops. This gives the impression that they have thought of everything, thus making it rather impersonal. I also do not like it when the interiors have been too researched; it quickly becomes lifeless.
I love it when there are touches of color allowing one to think of a festive and lively place and when there is a mix of different things, but only if it is practical and organized and not rigid.

How have you decorated your house / apartment?
My house looks like a small country house in the attic, with lots of different garlands, small decorative items for kids...sculptures that I made...

What is the latest decorative object that you bought?
The last decorative items that I bought were decorative plastic, fluorescent pink flowers at a Mexican store. The pink is almost too loud for my house but I liked them anyway.

Do you read décor magazines? If so, what is your favorite?
I do not read many décor magazines. I do page through “Elle Décor” from time to time but that’s it.
What is your hobby when you have some free time?
When I have time I like to do yoga or watch a television series with my children.
Une expo, un livre, un film, un article de mode à nous recommander ?
Recently, I saw “Where the Wild Things Are”, a film that really inspired me.
