Dominique Picquier Stuns us all at Tai Ping
Auteur : Axelle | 04-17-2010

Was it by chance that Dominique Picquier, chose to organize a “cocotte” diner when Cocotte-Design launched the blog? Well, this talented fabric designer in Paris was actually referring to culinary Dutch ovens and not to little hens (Côté Paris, Hiver 2010-Janvier 2010). The Cocottes think it was destiny!
Cocotte Design voted unanimously when seeking our first design guest: the up & coming Dominique Picquier.
For this first blog, I interviewed Dominique who was very willing to divulge her secrets to Cocotte Design.
I love Dominique’s fabrics and was truly amazed at the joint design effort in Paris when she worked with Tai Ping to create the luxurious ‘Suite Parisienne’ in January (Deco off du salon Maison & Objet, janvier 2010).

Dominique has a knack for designing and collaborating with other designers, and believes it is essential in the creative process. “I love to work with a team and I am passionate about working with other designers to reunite our savoir-faire; all by combining each others’ differences and constraints. This type of collaboration is only possible if we are all demanding however respectful of each others’ designs.”
The “Suite Parisienne” was an interesting “out of the atelier” project for Dominique as she designed the fabric mix for a luxurious evening in a chic hotel. “After working primarily with light and the outdoors, I wanted to work with Tai Ping and focus on a night theme: evening within a protective universe”.

Dominique mastered the fabric mix in the curtains with black marguerite viscose and folds of red linen/cotton fabric with a wild rose motif. In this stunning shot you can see the red fabric as a recall at back. Tai Ping used Dominique’s floral and graphic designs in their fabulous rugs on the floor and on the wall.
Dominique’s finishing touches were the embroidered Yves Delorme sheets with her designs and a bespoke chair in the marguerite viscose in gray. (Featured in the Côté Paris article, Talents en Chambre, p.38, fév/mars 2010) Truly stunning and everyone gasped ‘WOW’ upon arriving at the showcase suite with a glass of champagne in hand.
In interior design, you can truly have fun with fabric as an accessory in cushions, curtains or throws…..a bit like shoes, handbags, jewelry or even like a scarf in fashion design.
Once again, Dominique Picquier demonstrated her talent to do just that.

In the home, just like in the fashion world, you can perfectly follow the seasons and accessorize accordingly. By doing so, you can create a cosy atmosphere with warm, colored velvets, or for Spring bring in some fresh air with neutral soft or brut linens.
So Dominique, just what is your creative secret?
“I have many angles of attack: drawings and images. I mix my drawings (either on paper or silk screen) with images on the computer and play with the designs. My designs are based on original oil paintings and I correct the colors by hand and finalize them via silkscreen on the fabric. I spend most of my time perfecting the colors.”

Dominique are you an avid blog reader?
“Yes I love to read blogs, especially those for cooking, politics, fashion, computing, and news. I enjoy meeting bloggers and clients around the interior design theme, have exchanges, workshops in my boutique and share tastes, styles and advise.”

What is in store for us in 2010?
“Warm, delicious colors to add a bit of warmth to your interior”.

I particularly like:
- the 2010 collection with a rose palette that reminds me of a nice rasberry or strawberry sorbet. You could just eat them.
- the richness of her prints allow nature inside our home and allow freshness and light.
- Her made in France label along with tradition and savoir-faire from Lyon and Normandy.

What are your objectives in 2010 ?
Dominique plans on developing her fabric lines abroad, especially in the US and Japan. “I would also like to branch off into other decorative projects beyond fabric.”
A final word from Dominique on Women in Design?
“To be a woman in a professional environment requires a lot of energy, but once launched, women enjoy more freedom than men. However, men naturally know how to create their own networks. Women much less. They must work hard at developing professional networks.”
